Practicing Self Care During the NCL Games


Self care is important and it’s not necessarily easy. Anyone who tells you differently is trying to sell you something.

In between the network traffic analysis and banging your head against whatever convoluted challenge Franz and Toby have concocted this time around, keeping yourself sane is just as important as getting a lot of points. Here’s some suggestions for things you can do with the downtime you carve out for yourself:

With 5 Minutes You Can…

  • Make a mug cake
  • Get a glass of water
  • Make a cup of tea
  • Do some stretches
  • Do a lap around your block/apartment/dorm/house
  • Sit outside to get some fresh air
  • Play with your pet

The theme of this is getting up and away from your computer. Not only does this give you a bit of a mental reset, but staring at a screen all day is not good for headaches and eye strain.

With 15 – 30 Minutes You Can…

  • Have a conversation with a friend
  • Paint your nails
  • Take a shower
  • Do a chore you’ve been putting off
  • Change out of your PJs
  • Take a bath
  • Do a face mask

I can personally attest to how my hygiene tanked during the NCL games in college. Don’t be like me. Be better then me, I beg of you.

Things You Should Be Doing Regardless

  • Get at least 6 hours of sleep!
  • Eat at least 2 meals during the day!
  • Spend some time away from the computer to reduce eye strain!
  • Drink water!

This obviously isn’t a complete list and it’s presented like a Buzzfeed Listicle, but let’s get serious for a moment: Burning yourself out isn’t good for anyone. Just like cars need gas and occasional maintenance to run well, you need food and sleep with some occasional brain breaks to function.
